In 2025, Americans appear caught in a time warp combining the worst of the freewheeling ‘60s and greedy ‘80s, but without talented writers and musicians to see them through. James Baldwin, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr. have no successors. Kendrick Lamar, the most decorated anti-Establishment musician, is so far removed from Bob Dylan and Bob Marley,1 his greatest accomplishment will be dating voluptuous tennis star Serena Williams.2
"Once upon a time, all of us was in chains Homie still doubled down callin’ us some slaves Atlanta was the Mecca, buildin’ railroads and trains Bear with me for a second, let me put y’all on game The settlers was usin' town folk to make ‘em richer"
What happened to Americans? A clue might be in an email I recently received from James Rosebush. Mr. Rosebush is a stand-up gentleman from the Ronald Reagan years, and the opposite of Michael Moore, also from Flint, Michigan.3 After the fall of the Soviet Union, Mr. Rosebush left the White House and helped corporations and rich people grow. I am not a multi-national corporation, nor obscenely rich, so Mr. Rosebush and my path have no reason to cross. And yet, they did.
